This training module presents current research and practice knowledge on the dynamics of domestic violence. Behavioral and legal definitions of domestic violence are presented, the cycle of violence is outlined, and types of domestic violence are described. Additionally, participants are provided with theoretical information on how perpetrators learn to utilize domestic violence in their relationships. Finally, discussion is provided on reasons a victim of domestic violence may remain in an abusive relationship.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this training module, mental health staff will be able to:
     1. Define domestic violence and its function.
     2. Recognize types of abusive behavior.
     3. Determine how domestic violence is learned.
     4. Understand why some victims remain in abusive relationships.
